The Red Lion, Doncaster

Doncaster is an historic market town with a rich horseracing and railway culture. It was founded by the Romans in AD 71, because of its strategic position on the River Don. Doncaster has now become the heart of a vast metropolitan area, comprising green open spaces, nature reserves, ancient villages and Norman castles. There is something for everyone here, whether a day at the races, a trip to the famous market or a night on the town.

Doncaster Racecourse

Records of regular race meetings date from the 16th century, making this one of the oldest-established centres for horse-racing in Britain. The highlight of the year for Doncaster Races is the St Leger festival – the oldest of the five ‘classics’ in Britain. The name, St Leger, was proposed in The Red Lion by the Marquis of Rockingham, in the 18th century. For more information: www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk
