A thriving market town in the Usk Valley, Brecon was established in Norman times. Narrow, compact streets, Georgian façades and the restored canal basin all tell tales of times gone by.

For culture, seek the 12th-century cathedral, The Royal Welsh Museum and Brecknock Museum & Art Gallery.

On the second Saturday of every month, Brecknock farmers’ market is the biggest in the area – not forgetting the vast outdoors of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Local transport

There is no train station serving us. The closest mainline stations are Abergavenny and Merthyr Tydfil.

The town is located on the A470, which goes to Cardiff in the south and mid Wales to the north. Brecon bus station is on Heol Gouesnou, near to the Morrisons store. The main routes are:

39 Brecon – Hay on Wye – Kingstone – Hereford

X75 Merthyr Tydfil – Hirwaun – Glynneath – Neath – Swansea

T4 Newtown – Llandrindod Wells – Brecon – Merthyr Tydfil – Cardiff

The T4 travels from Cardiff all the way to Newtown, passing through the Brecon Beacons on its journey. It is known as the route with a view.

Every Sunday and bank holiday Monday, the Hay Ho! bus travels between Hay-on-Wye and Hereford: www.hayhobus.org.uk

Parking

Pay-and-display car parks, located near the hotel, are available for both long- and short-term stays. Car-parking is free overnight in the public car park behind the hotel, during 6pm–8am. For more details, contact the hotel.
