Our hotels – history and awards

• Pubs and hotels

When Wetherspoon opened its newest hotel to date, at the beginning of March 2016, The Greyhound became the company’s 43rd hotel across England, Scotland and Wales.

The existing pub, in Bridport, reopened its doors as a pub and hotel, following a development project costing in excess of £1.5 million – and now offers a 15-bedroom hotel.

There has been an inn on this site in Dorset since the 13th century. It is said to have been given its name in Tudor times, when the silver greyhound was the badge of the royal messenger. In 1851, The Greyhound was billed as ‘Commercial Inn, Greyhound Corn Exchange, Excise Office’. In 1910, the building’s exterior displayed the words ‘The Greyhound Hotel’.

Situated on the first and second floors of the building, above the pub, the new hotel rooms can accommodate double, twin or family occupancy. There are also meeting room facilities.

Like all Wetherspoon hotels, each of the rooms features an en suite bathroom, tea- and coffee-making facilities, hair dryer, flat-screen television with Freeview TV and unlimited free Wi-Fi, as well as digital air-conditioning and temperature control.

Our hotels combine the very best customer experience with superb quality and value. Whether you are seeking a family seaside holiday, a weekend city break or a business stay-over, our motto remains the same: quality accommodation at great prices.

We opened the doors to our first hotel in 1998: The Shrewsbury Hotel, in Shrewsbury. The 22-bedroom hotel, boasting views of the River Severn from many of its rooms, now enjoying an 18-year history of happy customers, continues to welcome guests.

From Aldershot to Whitby (in England), from Inverness to Peebles (in Scotland) or Newport to Ruthin (in Wales), we now offer more than 1,000 rooms in over 40 hotels nationwide.

Our stunning rooms provide unlimited free Wi-Fi as standard, and we have a dedicated staff member ready to assist you 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

All of our hotels have adjoining pubs, serving our delicious breakfast menu every morning and featuring your favourite Wetherspoon dishes and club nights.

The Unicorn Hotel, Ripon, which boasts 32 bedrooms in the heart of North Yorkshire, was also the company’s 800th pub.

Situated in one of Ripon’s oldest and most historic inns, it is the largest building on Market Place and retains much of its historic splendour, while providing modern-day levels of comfort.

The Pilgrim’s Progress, in Bedford, is soon to reopen (on 26 April) as a pub and new hotel.

The outlet, which first opened as a Wetherspoon pub in 1997, will soon offer 31 rooms, each beautifully decorated, comprising family rooms, twin and double rooms, as well as those designed specifically for customers with disabilities. There are also five deluxe family suites, to sleep a family of four (two adults and two children).

Our hotels continue to win awards, for not only for great design and innovation, but also our excellent customer service, with no fewer than nine Wetherspoon hotels recognised for the quality of service in the Simply the Guest Awards 2016.

Two of the awarded venues achieved success in two different categories, in the Late Rooms annual awards – the UK’s only hotels awards based purely on genuine guest reviews and presented by LateRooms.com, the online hotel booking specialist.

Topping the chart in number-one position, in the ‘budget hotels’ category, was The Portland Hotel, in Chesterfield.

The Royal Hop Pole, in Tewkesbury, finished fourth in the ‘historic hotels’ category, as well as ninth in the ‘customer service hotels’ poll. The Last Post, in Southend-on-Sea, achieved eighth position in both ‘budget hotels’ and ‘beach hotels’ categories.

In the ‘family friendly hotels’ section, Cabot Court Hotel, in Weston-super-Mare, finished fourth, while The Cross Keys (Peebles) achieved eighth place. The Kings Head Hotel (Beccles) came third in ‘business hotels’.

The Catherine Wheel Hotel, Henley-on-Thames, achieved sixth place in the ‘historic hotels’ category, The Shrewsbury Hotel, Shrewsbury, was fourth in the ‘budget hotels’ section and The Wyndham Arms, in Bridgend, was placed eighth in the ‘customer service hotels’ league table.
