More than 700 Wetherspoon pubs across the UK will be offering a selection of meals (with a drink) at a lower price than the equivalent food from Tesco - as part of the government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme.
All Wetherspoon pubs will be participating in the scheme, which is available on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday throughout August.
The government will cover half of the cost of a meal out, with a soft drink, up to a maximum of £10 a head, including children’s meals.
Taking into account the discount, customers at the Wetherspoon pubs will pay £2.24 for a breakfast, comprising a free-range egg, back bacon rasher, Lincolnshire sausage, hash brown, Heinz baked beans and a coffee (with free refill), £2.75 for an 11’’ Margherita pizza and Pepsi Max (398ml) and £2.37 for a deli deal, comprising a Southern-fried chicken & smoky chipotle mayo wrap, with chips and Remedy Kombucha raspberry lemonade.
Based on a price comparison (July 29 2020) customers at Tesco would pay £2.33 for an all-day breakfast ready meal and Kenco Duo Cappuccino instant coffee, £4.96 for a Finest Buffalo mozzarella & tomato pizza and Pepsi (330ml) and £3 for Tesco’s sandwich meal deal.
As a result of the scheme, a traditional breakfast in 747 Wetherspoon pubs will cost £1.75, a coffee or tea (with free refill) in 821 pubs will cost 65p, a classic burger with soft drink in 671 pubs will cost £2.50 and a children’s meal (choices include spaghetti Bolognese and five-bean chilli, with each meal including a drink and a banana or a fruit snack) in 792 pubs will cost £2.08.
Wetherspoon chairman, Tim Martin, said: “Thanks to the government scheme, an individual is £2.93 better off eating and drinking at Wetherspoon than purchasing a similar range of products at Tesco.
“Over a 13 day period customers would save £38.09.
“As Tesco’s customers will appreciate, every little helps.
“Prices at some of our town and city centre pubs are higher and the comparison with Tesco does not work in these cases.
“However, the vast majority of our pubs will be offering a range of meals (with a drink) at unbeatable prices."
